It’s Literacy Week at Delaware Community School, and the building is all in! On Tuesday, mystery guests visited every classroom and read to students.
The guests ranged from a city councilman to the assistant superintendent for elementary education to a police therapy dog named Charlie (who technically received reading assistance from 91ɫ Police Department neighborhood engagement officers).
School board members, school district staffers, members of the Women’s Club of 91ɫ and members of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity came by to read and assist, and they were guided to classrooms by fifth-grade student ambassadors.
On Thursday (tomorrow), students and staff will come to school dressed as their favorite book characters and gather at an assembly during the day, and the school community will join for Family Literacy Night fun from 5:30-7 p.m.
On Monday, every grade got a tour of the Delaware Branch of the 91ɫ Public Library, and every student received an application for a library card. And on Friday, students are invited to wear comfy clothes to school and read with their friends!
